A Study on the Design Disadvantages of Power Wheelchairs

I. Introduction

With the aging of the global population, the market demand for power wheelchairs is growing as an important mobility aid. Power wheelchairs not only provide convenience for the elderly, the disabled and those recovering from injuries, but also greatly enhance their quality of life. However, the quality of power wheelchair products on the market varies, and there are many design drawbacks, which not only affect the user's experience, but also may bring potential safety hazards. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to conduct an in-depth study on the design drawbacks of electric wheelchairs and put forward suggestions for improvement.

Theoretical Basis and Literature Review

The invention of electric wheelchair can be traced back to the beginning of the 20th century, the United States in 1940 issued the first patent certificate of electric wheelchair. Early electric wheelchair products were bulky, lack of efficiency and low reliability, but with the progress of science and technology, the design and control technology of electric wheelchair has been significantly improved. In particular, the use of microprocessors in the manufacture of controllers has led to a significant improvement in the manoeuvrability and stability of electric wheelchairs. However, despite the continuous progress of technology, there are still some problems in the design of electric wheelchairs that cannot be ignored.

Previous studies have mainly focused on the comfort, portability, safety and intelligence of electric wheelchairs, and many improvement suggestions have been put forward. However, there are still some gaps in the current research, such as the comprehensive assessment system of electric wheelchair design has not yet been established, and the specific performance and impact of design drawbacks lack in-depth analysis. Therefore, this study aims to fill this gap and conduct an in-depth discussion on the design drawbacks of power wheelchairs.

Research Methods and Data Sources

This study adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, specifically including literature analysis, market research, user interviews and product design evaluation.

Literature analysis: through reviewing relevant literature, we understand the development history, technical status and design trends of electric wheelchairs.

Market research: collect product information of electric wheelchairs in the market, including brand, model, price, function, etc.

User interviews: Select a certain number of electric wheelchair users to conduct interviews to understand their experience, satisfaction and suggestions for improvement.

Product Design Evaluation: Evaluate the product design of common electric wheelchairs in the market and analyse their design drawbacks.

The research data mainly comes from market research reports, user interview records and product design assessment reports.

Research results and analyses

Through product design assessment and user interviews of common electric wheelchairs in the market, this study finds that electric wheelchairs have the following design drawbacks:

Battery safety risk: the batteries of some electric wheelchairs have safety risks such as overcharging, over-discharging and high temperature, which may lead to battery damage or cause fire.

Insufficient structural strength: the structural design of some electric wheelchairs cannot withstand accidental collision or stress during use, resulting in failure or damage during use.

Excessive travelling speed: the travelling speed of some electric wheelchairs is too fast, which increases the risk of accidents during use.

Failure of the braking system: the braking system of some electric wheelchairs is at risk of failure, which makes it impossible to stop in time during travelling and leads to accidents such as collision or fall.

Lack of safety warning signs: Some of the use environments lack obvious safety warning signs, resulting in users not understanding the potential danger zone, increasing the safety risk.

These design shortcomings not only affect the use of electric wheelchairs experience, but also may pose a threat to the personal safety of users. Therefore, effective measures must be taken to improve them.

V. Conclusions and Recommendations

This study draws the following conclusions from an in-depth study of the design drawbacks of electric wheelchairs:

Electric wheelchairs have design drawbacks such as battery safety risks, insufficient structural strength, excessive travelling speed, brake system failure and lack of safety warning signs.

These design drawbacks not only affect the use experience of electric wheelchairs, but also may pose a threat to the personal safety of users.

In response to the above conclusions, this study proposes the following recommendations:

Enhance battery safety protection: install a protection plate inside the battery to prevent overcharging and over-discharging; design the battery shell material with good thermal insulation; develop an intelligent charging management system that automatically cuts off the power when the battery power reaches the preset value and prompts the user to recharge.

Optimise structural design: choose high-strength and corrosion-resistant materials to improve the strength and stability of the mechanical structure; optimise the structural design to reduce stress concentration and improve structural stability.

Limit the travelling speed: set the speed limiter to ensure that the travelling speed of the electric wheelchair is within the safety range.

Improve the braking system: adopt a reliable braking system to ensure that it can stop in time during travelling.

Increase the safety warning signs: clearly mark the safety warning signs and instructions on the products to remind the users to pay attention to safe operation.
